Criminal mastermind with a massive web of connections and lieutenants, doing all sorts of shady crime, sometimes for hire. Also has a secret registered hero identity as:
Irene Adler/Titian
Registered but retired hero with the ability to paint the future that she doesn't use anymore, still a friendly presence on the Watch and around the city.
YOU MAY HAVE HEARD OF THIS CHARACTER IF: You've probably heard of Moriarty in passing, under the nickname of the the Chessmaster; criminals and CONDOR probably know the name Moriarty. Thought to be male and whether they have powers of any kind is unknown, Moriarty's been responsible for murders, terrorism, massive thefts, and plenty of other miscellaneous events over the last dozen years. TRIDENT will probably be aware Moriarty's one of them, but think he's male and not know his powers.
You might have heard of Irene Adler/Titian if you're a fan of art, as she runs the Adler Gallery; if you've paid lots of attention to the Watch in the last year and a half, up until the Alpha Force members disappearing; or if you paid lots of attention to very low-level superhero teams in New York 5-9 years ago.
YOU MAY KNOW THIS CHARACTER IF: Bad guys, people willing to hire them, and TRIDENT may have crossed paths with Moriarty. They'd have been speaking to her male lieutenant, though, so they won't know her, though they may have interacted by text or email. "He" was known to mostly operate from New York at first, but for the last four or five years, it's more or less been "he's everywhere and no one's sure where he's set up" (except possibly TRIDENT).
New York transfers may know Irene from there; she was a D-level superhero, started nine years ago and retired five years ago, and made plenty of friends in the superhero community around then. People who are willing to talk to a friendly retired superhero on the watch have a chance of having run into her on there in the last year and a half, and people who go to art galleries often might have met her through there.
PLANS & IDEAS FOR THIS CHARACTER: So much crime. There's crime and horrible things to be done. There's a chance for villains, criminals, and neutrals/vigilantes on the darker side of things who don't care who's bankrolling them to end up recruited to Moriarty's network (or to have been previously, if you want to work it that way), so if you want to play with that, hit me up. (They probably still won't know it's her, so I'll be NPCing her lieutenant for those situations
you know, unless someone wants to pick him up, that's cool too.)She's got good guy/hero friends in her Irene identity, so I'm happy for her to have known somebody in the game who's been around. She's also a blunt, headstrong person, so I'm happy for some mild negative CR with people who just don't like Irene.
What I'd really love is for there to be a couple of heroes she can get obsessive over, the way canon!Moriarty does with Sherlock Holmes. This can be platonic or romantic/sexual, but if you play someone you think she might have reason to be interested in (massive intellect, particularly interesting powers, generally not being normal and boring even by standards that include superheros) and you don't mind her setting her sights on them, we should talk. This may eventually end in her trying to emotionally destroy and isolate them to be able to lure them to her-as-Moriarty's side, or putting them through tests to see if they hold up to her standards and her genius, so seriously, we should talk about potentials and limits if you want to jump on this.
THINGS YOU'D PREFER TO AVOID: I've got nothing specific, but the longer it takes anyone to figure out who Moriarty is, the more fun, so nothing that will directly lead to her being made yet. (People gunning for Moriarty-the-crime-lord is totally fine, just not connecting "him" to Irene yet.)

- there was a cyber-terrorist organization called the Errorists operating mainly out of France until about three years ago
- Nilin was their most important agent, mostly because she has cool memory powers and is just generally pretty good at fighting. her true identity would have been pretty top secret and not at all accessible to anyone that wasn't herself or Edge, BUT given her abilities and her status she would have had some level of infamy at least within the organization and maybe in the media
- I left it pretty open so except for their actual leadership and motivations Moriarty could be involved if you wanted! they're one of those groups with all these ~noble causes~ but very shady means of actually achieving their goals so it's not at all impossible that they might have ties to some part of the whole web-o-crime, but also they may just have been infamous enough for moriarty to want to keep an eye on them obviously that is all up to you!
- Nilin's working with CONDOR now but i am SO HERE for people trying to manipulate her and/or re-introducing some morality crises back into her life
- I also just think Nilin and Irene would get along great
- OBVS THIS IS ALL TOTALLY UP TO YOU but Nilin might be interesting to Moriarty just because she is so effective at what she does? she has an exceptional mind for problem solving in tense situations and she can pretty much accomplish anything she puts her mind to, which is evident at least by her work with the Errorists, less so with CONDOR because she's only been with them a short time
- (this also might be why she has such a hard time with morals, because she could probably have anything she wanted if she decided to take it)

The combination of her sheer competence and her very interesting powers, and the fact that they're one of the few powers that could easily blow her cover, could actually make Nilin extremely interesting to Moriarty, even without the criminal past. Irene is technically registered with CONDOR and still hangs about superheroes, and I could definitely see her making a point of getting to know her (while being absolutely, fanatically careful about not being in contact with her, maybe even playing up the "trauma from being held captive" as a "I don't like people touching me anymore").
So they could either be previously acquainted, or get acquainted from here on out, depending on whether you'd prefer it pre-established or to develop it now. And Moriarty being Moriarty would definitely find ways to test her morals if she found Nilin interesting on that level, so there's that.
As for the Errorists, they'd definitely have been on her radar, whether or not she's actually involved. They're big enough to have been kept an eye on, it sounds like. It could be interesting to have her & her web of dubious morals have some ties, though she wouldn't be behind it; maybe bankrolling them on occasion? Or the other way around; if they'd be willing to hire outside contractors, she'd definitely be able to sell herself to somebody who didn't actually care how their goals got achieved, as long as they were sure they could achieve them, so she may not have been part of it, but might have been hired once or twice.
Alternately, less there being existing ties and more taking opportunity, she could have recruited a few members once the organization folded. Hmmm. I am thinking on the various options still, but if you have any preference/suggestions, since this is your character's backstory it's all tied in on, please do let me know.

Also I'm cool with pre-established CR or not! Either way Nilin's still relatively new to LA, so there's plenty to develop. It would probably be easy to get them acquainted via the art gallery since Nilin would be the type to visit. And she's not too touchy-feely so I'm sure Moriarty wouldn't have to make very many excuses for herself.

If there's a good chance for them to run into each other, than I'm up for them not knowing each other to start with? There's the barbeque, as I mentioned over on plurk, and there'll probably be an art gallery post at some point soon, so there'll be plenty of chances for them to start and develop an acquaintance -- and Moriarty being interested means actively trying to develop one, so. :)
