TEST DRIVE MEME #1

No gimmicky dinosaur setup this time round, since the game is actually rolling now! If you've got a character you want to try out in this setting, make a thread with them on here, and if you don't, see if you can tag other people with your characters.

Test drive threads can be anything you like, in-person or online, just make it clear which one your thread is when you start it. Make sure to put the name of the character and what canon they're from in the subject, so people know who they are and where they come from.

[ Lina's the new kid on Alpha Force -- and kid is right. She's only 18, and still pretty fresh-faced, although she's proven that she's not afraid to get her hands dirty. She's maybe a little too ready to hop into the fray, honestly, judging by the way she slings explosive spells around.

But mostly what she knows how to beat up are of Earthly origin. The planet's been facing some pressure from outside forces lately, and Lina's just not as intuitive about beating up aliens. So after studying up on some arcane techniques, she figures she'll pay the alien expert guy a visit. Geiszler, right? Some kind of fancy-pants guy with a whole stack of degrees. Anyway, she's heard he's supposed to be CONDOR's xeno expert, so Lina's off to his office to pick his brain a while.

The door to his office is open, which Lina hadn't really expected at this hour -- it's kind of late, she wasn't even really sure he'd be here. But sure enough, it's open, and there's some young dude puttering around in there. Geiszler's assistant, maybe? Whatever. Lina pokes her head in, tapping her fingers on the doorjamb. ]

Is Dr. Geiszler here? I'm looking to talk to him about some...aliens.

[Ever since the threat of Skrulls had reared it's head again--to be fair, the potential threat of Skrulls never really leaves--Newt's been pulling all his resources together to come up with some sort of information docket for new heroes who've never encountered them before as well as fielding a whole buttload of calls of just people asking for that information. He's been getting progressively more and more irritated with each person who makes that call, so when the girl turns up at his door, he doesn't even look around, mussing around with files that were completely out of order because his lack of filing system is sort of biting him in the ass.]

It's just Newt. And, dude get in line, everybody wants to talk about aliens.

[ Wait, seriously? This guy is the xenobiology expert? Lina stares skeptically for a moment, but hey, she's pretty accomplished for her age, too. Besides, the more pressing thing is that he's not even looking at her. Talk about a lack of manners. ]

Hey! Don't you know it's rude not to look at someone when they're talking to you? I'm not just anyone. I'm on Alpha Force -- hello, big important hero team, kind of on the front lines of this fight? I'm at the front of the line, buster, so let's talk aliens.

[ And she walks right into his office, taking stock of the place in a glance. It's a mess -- not exactly impressive. Then again, neither is Lina, standing at only 5' and a little on the...scrawny side, but she likes to think her sheer presence makes up for it. ]

[He makes a short, irritated noise at the back of his throat and turns around, arms full of odd bits of paperwork that he's not sure goes where and looking a little stressed. His perfectly gelled hair isn't so perfectly gelled, and his sleeves are haphazardly rolled up, tie almost completely undone. He doesn't look like he's had much sleep.]

--Dude, how old are you? Like twelve? [he says, raising an eyebrow, before shoving the papers down on his desk.]

[ oh no you DIDN'T ]

Excuse me? Do you have any idea who you're talking to?! I am Lina Inverse, sorceress of pretty much unparalleled skill, and I am not twelve!

[ R U D E ]

Besides, it's not like you look much like a doctor!

[HE DID. And he probably shouldn't because people have been giving him shit about this stuff for years. But his job involved a lot less fighting and a lot more reading. He didn't even know Alpha Force let people on so young, given the dangerous nature of the job.

He gives her a look, eyebrows raised in a sort of 'do you even know who I am' kind of way.]

That's because I'm a rock-star.

A rock star.

[ dude, look how high her eyebrows just show up. ]

[h doesn't even care.]

A rock star scientist. Sweater vests and tweed is out, tattoos and leather is in.

[ Lina just gives him that deadpan stare for another moment longer, and then…she eases up, giving him a grin. Okay, there's definitely a challenge in that grin, but it's a far cry from the angry heckling from a moment before. She leans back against the wall, crossing her arms, and raises an eyebrow. ]

All right, so wow me, Mister Rock Star. What do you know about Skrulls?

[ Whether Lina will ever take you seriously again totally rides on whatever he says next. She's big on first impressions. ]

[Newt doesn't really care what a lot of the fighters think about him. They have no idea how much work goes into compiling these reports, and if it was up to Newt, he would just pass the information off to someone else to write the paperwork. Just let him root around in alien organs forever and try and figure out how they tick. He shoves all the paperwork on his desk and goes to grab a tablet, swiping through a few documents.]

What don't I know? They're really fascinating and creepy at the same time, which is totally my favourite.

[he hands Lina the tablet, which has a few detailed drawings of skrulls with annotations.] Their biology is seriously whack. Shapeshifter DNA is usually pretty unstable, but these guys have unstable molecules within their DNA. I'm not really sure how they don't just explode and all the ones I've worked on are all slightly different genetically. Which, for me, sort of points to having multiple subtle variations of the species because of their unstable genetic code.

[he swipes the tablet in her hands, talking with passion and fascination, similar to the type a child has when they're telling you about something awesome they poked with a stick in the woods.] They can shape shift into pretty much anything thanks to the molecular instability. Like, inorganic and organic, as long as it's within a certain parameter of their mass, since they can't change that drastically. But like, they can change parts of their body into weapons or disguise themselves as one of us pretty easily.

[ Lina listens with rapt attention, her eyes sharp on the table and Newt both as she takes in everything he says, tapping her fingers along the edge of the tablet in thought. She takes a moment to mull that over, but not as long as he might have expected. ]

Unstable molecules, huh? So if they can shapeshift into anything...it's not just cosmetic, right? They can adapt.

[he's impressed that she's paying this much attention.]

Their genetic code seems to be so weird that they can take on properties of metals or plastics as well as organic stuff. Their deal is adapting and infiltrating and even if they are discovered they'll be pretty difficult opponents because they can just change themselves into something that isn't weak against whatever you're throwing at them.

[he pauses.] Depending on their total mass.

[ Figures there's no easy solution with these guys. Then again, Lina didn't sign up for easy. She's in serious mode now, her gaze intent as she studies the tablet screen, looking back up at Newt. ]

So the only real tactic with them...is to keep changing tactics.

[Newt gives a nod, taking the tablet back to swipe through a few more information slides.]

Or wait until I find something that can destabilise their genetic code.

[ Lina's eyes go wide with keen interest. Yes, hello, tell me more. ]

And what kind of thing could do that?

[Newt rubs at his eyes under his glasses. It seems that he's been trying to find something that could.]

I'll let you know when I find it.

[ awww, and you look like you've been working hard, Newt. Lina looks at him consideringly, seriously, lacing her fingers together and resting her chin on them. ]

What if I could help you find it? [ She grins slightly. ] You seem like the kinda guy who likes to think outside the box.

[Newt moves his hands from his face up into his hair to give it a comb through with his fingers and then leans against the edge of his desk. He eyes her for a moment.]

Who did you say you were again?

Lina Inverse, beautiful sorcery genius and newly-appointed Alpha Force superstar, at your service. [ Lina gives him a cheeky grin and a wink with a little flourish, tossing her hair. ] You could say I've got a few tricks up my sleeve.

[he smirks a little at her title. So that's why he's not run into her yet--she's brand new--and it's probably why she's come straight to him instead of waiting for the docket like everyone else. But she's certainly entertaining.

He raises an eyebrow.]

So what, magic and science or something?

Bingo!

[ Lina gives him the ol' finger gun and a wink. She is SO charming. ]

It's a pretty underrated combination, if you ask me. With my magical genius, and your scientific genius, I bet we could come up with something to really mess with the Skrulls...and then we'd really be rock stars.

[ Lina grins even wider, and her eyes positively sparkle as she leans toward Newt. ]

Come on, Newt, you've got an imagination, dream with me for a second here. Lina Inverse and Newt Geiszler, heroes of Earth! Singlehandedly -- well, okay, doublehandedly engineering the solution to the Skrull invasion! Can you imagine the glory, Newt? The fans? The patent revenue?

[ She sighs, dreamily. ]
