PRE-APPLICATION DISCUSSION POST!

Hey guys! I had some requests for a discussion post where people can shoot the shit about potential backstory and power ideas, so here it is!

For best results, make sure to check out the FAQ and other setting information for inspiration, such as superhero registration and power levels, as well as taking at peek at the game wiki to see what's already been started!

POST RULES:
  • Feel free to discuss any facet of the setting you like, and how they relate to your character ideas!
  • Please keep in mind though, that nothing can be set in stone until the related apps are accepted. Try to not rely completely on everything on this board being apped successfully.
  • If you would like to know whether something sounds good to the mods, just flag us down by giving a shout in the subject line or by pinging us on plurk! We'll hit you up as soon as we can.
  • Have fun!

I'm not sure what warging in so I may need some explanation for that before I can comment on that.

But, basically, the idea of some kind of Family History when it comes to superheroes makes total sense in terms of the Starks, but I think you may need to just be a tad less specific in terms of Jon's castmates. Like, defining a bit of a family structure is definitely ok, but try not to name everyone with specific roles, because that could very quite restricting to future players.

And like, in that case, you would definitely want to slow down in regards to the Tully's and stuff, at least from the start.

Sorry if I am misunderstanding anything! I have a bit of canon knowledge of ASOIAF but not much.

yeah I was pretty nervous bringing jon in as a lcw because his characterization presupposes a lot of things about his family structure?? a big part of his character is his position as ned stark's bastard/the bastard of winterfell and a desire to live up to his house's/father's example. most of his childhood was spent in friendly competition with robb. it's very difficult to fully understand him outside of the context of these relationships. some biographical details are necessary in order to articulate what they mean and how they affect jon. in order for him to be the person he is at this point relative to his canon, he needs to have grown up in a certain environment, and I tried to translate that environment to this au as accurately as possible. I would be super okay with changing anything in his background to match up with potential castmates. I tried to explain each of these changes in the 'differences from canon' section of his app. one of the distinctive/annoying things about asoiaf is that every character's actions are the result of years and years of history and it's very difficult to separate a character from their upbringing and the choices made by their parents and family members before they were even able to have a say in it. this is especially evident with jon as opposed to his siblings, as he might possibly be connected to to some kind of ancient conspiracy involving lyanna stark and the targaryen dynasty that drives the main plot of the series. I tried to gloss over that as best as I could, but a major theme of the series is that the current plot was set in motion years ago during robert's rebellion, and that the choices made then shaped the current characters into what they are now.

tl;dr, it's very difficult to talk about jon without talking about what it means to be ned stark's bastard (or the superhero equivalent), and it's very difficult to explain what that means without outlining the basic role and character of ned stark. I am open to suggestions tho!

Yeah, I totally get that! And I do think it is fine describing those relationships, since yeah, ASOIAF characters are very much tied up in other people. I think the best way to go about this would be to just focus on the relationships and not so much what the other character is DOING. Like I think it being a family trend thing is alright to say too.

If you are flexible about changing things that helps a lot too. Another tactic is you can just refer to people without actually specifying names, unless it's really necessary. I find that helps sometimes.

But yeah some of this will be inevitable, I just thought I'd mention it as something to be on the cautious side with.

I was mostly brainstorming here, I think his app is much more bare bones? I really don't mind retconning anything but I do need to make some assumptions about his family members in order to move forward.
