PRE-APPLICATION DISCUSSION POST!

Hey guys! I had some requests for a discussion post where people can shoot the shit about potential backstory and power ideas, so here it is!

For best results, make sure to check out the FAQ and other setting information for inspiration, such as superhero registration and power levels, as well as taking at peek at the game wiki to see what's already been started!

POST RULES:
  • Feel free to discuss any facet of the setting you like, and how they relate to your character ideas!
  • Please keep in mind though, that nothing can be set in stone until the related apps are accepted. Try to not rely completely on everything on this board being apped successfully.
  • If you would like to know whether something sounds good to the mods, just flag us down by giving a shout in the subject line or by pinging us on plurk! We'll hit you up as soon as we can.
  • Have fun!

    Junpei Iori | Persona 3

    [personal profile] hangedmagician 2014-01-10 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Quickly running through the bare bones of my current origin/backstory and powerset for this guy. This is basically a test of if this sounds consistent enough outside of canon and all. The other thing I'm worried about is if it sounds like it's a bit too much like 'making a human something else for funsies', which is really why I wanted to bring it up early before I started poking too hard.

Origin story, then! For people who know his canon, it's roughly based on his arc with Chidori and how he acquires Trismegistus. Otherwise...
Basically, silly boy here gets involved with a strange girl he meets. Over time, they become close, fall for each other: but it turns out that she's an alien. Dun dun dun. I'm eyeballing this as her being some kind of energy being in human form. Crap happens with her and some others from her own world (planet? dimension?): poor Junpei gets mixed up in it by accident, and is sadly killed. However, because reasons (already dying from having spent too long on Earth?) she gives up her own life, merges with him, revives him: he's now not quite human, not quite one of them... and eventually realises that with the new abilities he's been given, hey, he could get on with this superheroing thing...

The powerset's based around energy (heat) manipulation. Heat-ray type effects and solid-energy constructs/blades. So far so consistent, but with his part-inhuman status and having been revived, the other ability of his from canon I'd like to bring in would be a degree of a healing factor. Nothing particularly strong as yet, but accelerated recovery with perhaps an 'in future this'll get stronger' sidenote.

At present, he probably comes out as a Rank D: powers are there, but he's hella untrained.

    Thoughts?

Just so you know, for Ranks, it isn't really based on training so much as how overall effective they are! Having any useful powers at all would probably make him better than Rank D, unless he is super incompetent. Primarily it is based in how objectively powerful he is though.

The backstory also sounds good to me! This sort of stuff is great for the setting. How did that all go down in canon?

(PS this is Quix, one of the mods, hi.)

    ATTN PROSPECTIVE FANTROLLS

    [personal profile] 10thingsihateaboutme 2014-01-10 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I know I've seen some people talking about potentially apping fantrolls, so I just wanted to throw this up here! We've established that in recent years, probably just after the second invasion attempt on Earth (in the 90s), trolls have occasionally managed to make it across the galaxy to hang out as refugees on Earth, even though people tend not to like trolls very much what with those invasion attempts. Trolls on Earth are not SUPER common but there are a few here and there. (The assumption is sort of that because this AU's version of Alternia has come up against civilisations it can't conquer, more trolls are willing to try to leave the Empire and try their luck in less tyrannical environments.)

ANYWAY, we've established that the two canon trolls we've got already – Karkat and Sollux - were involved in an escape attempt that made it out of the Empire but got split up after that, and we've been keeping it intentionally vague in order to accommodate more people. We would be interested in having other canon characters with a reason to want out of troll society involved in this! HOWEVER we've been keeping it vague about how exactly the escape was arranged because we want to be open to involving other characters too – like, your fantrolls. If you've got a fantroll who you'd like to involve in this then please please bring them to us. Involve your fan characters in our canon characters' backstory. There is nothing we would desire more

    origin story input?

    [personal profile] civilizedcombat 2014-01-10 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
I think that Cynthia's canon backstory translates pretty ok to CH, but I want to lay out what I have just to be sure that it's alright! if anyone has any input or ideas or really anything, I'd love to hear it!

So far what I have is: Cynthia grew up with her superhero mother Sumia (and maybe a dad too?? I don't know what to do about the father situation, because no marriage or father-child relationship in FE:A is "canon"). She was very close to her mother, but despite that influence in her life, she did not particularly want to be a superhero. She was preoccupied with other, more normal things, like hanging out with friends and keeping up with school. She would have been happy to stay a civilian with cool powers and live a normal life. But, of course, it didn't go that way. One day, her mother MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED while on a mission, and Cynthia received the terrible news that her mother was probably dead. She also received her mother's wedding ring, which was found around where Sumia was supposedly doing superhero stuff. The event influenced her so greatly that her entire view on her role in the world shifted. Ever since then, Cynthia has worn the ring in her mother's memory, and she has vowed to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a superhero. Part of this is to help and protect others the way her mother did, but part of it is also to see if she can one day find her mother. She's hopeful that Sumia is still out there, somewhere.

She's definitely a registered superhero, as she believes that's more heroic (though she believes there's sort of a ~cool~ aspect to being a Teen Vigilante Superhero). She's young, so I'd imagine she would register with the Trailblazers.

As for her superpowers, they're innate. She can fly and she can make other stuff fly too. Sometimes at very fast speeds. Sometimes even in the direction she chooses. (She's still working on it.) I imagine she'd be a D ranking at the moment? Maybe just barely a C. She doesn't have too much combat training, or superpower training, but her powers have the potential to be pretty good as she learns how to use them.

LOOKIN GOOD I AM REALLY EXCITED ABOUT CYNTHIA

if she's a Trailblazer she'd receive training before she went into active heroing – I hadn't specifically thought about this before but there are probably like more experienced active Trailblazers and then, like, in-training ones who are newer and don't go on actual hero duty yet but get to spar with the older ones and then come along as backup occasionally or whevsies once they're good enough

I'm mostly just sort of thinkin aloud here though like you may have been assuming this was the case already oops

    Nagisa Hazuki | Free!

    [personal profile] clubpenguin 2014-01-10 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
So my app for this kid is basically done except for the samples BUT IT IS KINDA LONG so to summarize:

I'm writing Nagisa in as having the power of persuasion, manifesting from when he first swims the relay as a child. His canon background is mostly the same (mostly with development differences due to his power), but his timeline diverges from before the start of the anime, so he hasn't reunited with the rest of the swim club and hasn't met Rei at all. I really want castmates though so if anyone out there is even kind of considering PLEASE COME TO ME and I am 100% willing to talk to you and change stuff and work out pre-established CR.

Of course, I am also totally up for pre-established CR from non-castmates! The easiest would probably be if they live in the same apartment building or attend the same school? Nagisa is unregistered due to the tricky nature of his ability (and the fact that he's kind of living illegally whoops) but he's planning to start his own youth vigilante team. From the reserves page I feel like most qualifying youth plan on joining the Trailblazers, but if there are any who aren't and might be interested in a super sneaky alternative, please do hit me up!

(Oh yeah, as far as power levels go I have him as Rank D because while his ability is inherently super broken he's still really young and effectiveness varies a lot. But from the discussion up there with Junpei, I get the impression it should actually be graded on potential? Mods, if you have any input it would be great, thanks!)

re: power levels, it's basically like in terms of how much damage the character is currently capable of doing, intentionally or not – so a character who has no powers but has been trained in hand to hand combat would probably have a lower rank than a character who can generate powerful lasers but can't control their ability to do that. If a character's inexperience limits the amount of effect their power has then it would lower the ranking. I think we've been sort of unclear about this, so sorry for the confusion! I'm going to update the power levels page to make sure it's clearer, haha

(please excuse my disdainful default icon it is the only one i have)

YEAH. I DID IT. I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY

Following the whole 'demons' thing that SMT games run on- spirits are recognized and exist in this world, right? In any case, other than samples I've got her app up here as well as a whole bunch of excitement and tears because there goes the rest of my non-rp time

Another thing- she'd definitely sign up with Trailblazers, so that's settled, but her power level... is extremely tentative. Thing is, while she control over elemental magic thanks to the demons, she's also extremely reliant on them, and still uses a COMP to summon them so if her COMP was destroyed or all her demons wiped out, she'd still fight valiantly but probably go down pretty quickly. Plus, she can't exactly... run very fast with that clothing of hers.

So is she a D or a C? Since she doesn't exactly have the ability to protect herself against most threats. She may seem super-powerful with her angels and demons but they're not very... reliable. Also, I plan to have the Shomonkai be a rather big thing is Japan, is that alright?

Anyway, thoughts? especially on my origin story i'm sorry i hurt you again amane

For rankings, it doesn't really matter how unreliable her powers are, just ultimately how effective she is capable of being. Like IF the COMP was destroyed she would be neutralized, but how often would that happen? It's sort of a question of how good she is on average.

I'm trying to figure out Micchi's backstory but there's one thing that I'm having trouble with. Does this sound alright?

His origin story's kind of the same as canon, where he's the son of the owner of the Yggdrasil Corporation (it's evil btw), but he and his brother never go to Zawame. His brother gets assigned to the Yggdrasil branch in LA, and Micchi requests to go with him. I've decided that instead of having innate powers he gets to keep his neat belt and be a kamen rider, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how he gets his belt? In the show he gets it from a dealer to help his friends, but here there's no dealer and no friends. I was thinking that his brother brought home a belt and Micchi basically steals it with intent to give it back and then just never gives it back. His brother is ranked highly enough in the company to have access to top secret equipment like that and he's absentminded enough to leave these things unattended but it still feels a little flimsy to me.

I'm just really attached to him keeping his belt because his transformation involves a grape falling from the sky onto his head.

(I've been calling him Micchi just because that's what I'm used to but seeing as he never met Gaim in CH there'd be no reason for him to have that nickname...)

Also I'm totally open to CR or team ups or anything! Micchi's an unregistered teen hero because he feels weird about his hero activities being controlled by any adults.

HEY FRIEND! I'm obviously not a mod so I'm not at all an authority on whether it works or doesn't, but I do have a question that hopefully will help out with the concern of flimsiness (if thats ok)!

Have you figured out why he took the belt in the first place? Because I think having a solid reason (whether it's "he had to stop a bad thing" or "he wanted to play with it and got into a situation where he had to be a hero using the belt" or anything that would explain why he took it and maybe also why he didnt give it back) would strengthen the backstory a lot. If that reason ties in with how he decided to become a superhero, I think it's even better.

also the initial reason I wanted to comment is to say oh my god tHE GRAPE FALLING OUT OF THE SKY.........(i haven't kept up with gaim but it looks like i need to start)

Amy Yuuzaki/Zyuden Sentai Kyoruger (aka BRAVE DINO SAMBAS)

    [personal profile] demlegseratops 2014-01-10 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Alright I may need to figure out how this is going to work, at least in origin of her powers. The backstory isn't much of a problem, daughter of a wealthy Japanese family whose business booms in America, but she isn't much for just sitting around and being pretty all day. But when it comes to becoming a Super Sentai it's a bit awkward.

In canon she, and the other Kyoryuger, are picked by an ancient bird themed alien for their great bravery in order to face other evil aliens that want to steal emotions to ressurect their beast of a master. But to prove worthy of becoming Kyoryuger they have to defeat their pre-requisite Sentai giant robots in honorable combat, to show they have the bravery to be partners with them. Therein lies the problem-these are just roboticized dinosaurs that fought besides bird-guy that have existed for millions of years waiting for the evil aliens to attack again...because the evil aliens are what killed the dinosaurs, with anthropomorphic versions of extinction level events (disease, the ice age, and metors). So that may be a slight issue. I'm wondering how to get around that.
Both because I'm unsure where a sentai robot would sit on the power scale (not that she'd need or use unless it's against a giant enemy), and because I doubt having robot dinosaurs just sit in seclusion for that long and not be discovered is doubtful.

Hmmm, yeah, giant robots might be a tricky element to include as just a matter of course in superhero fights; on the whole we'd prefer to keep the hero scale a little smaller than sentai robots where we can. Perhaps you could AU it so that instead of robots they're some kind of ancient dinosaur spirit that like bonds with them after they prove their worth and allows them to use special dinosaur powers via a transformation sequence, or something like that?

STARKS STARKS STARKS STARKS (a song of ice and fire)

    [personal profile] hellacold 2014-01-10 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
some of this should be covered in jon's app when I finish it, but here is the basic family history in this AU

the stark family prides itself on having produced an exceptional amount of metahumans in the past (mainly because most of them prior to the 20th century were fairly famous miraculous rabbis). around 25 years ago or so four stark siblings-brandon, ned, lyanna, and benjen--formed a sort of power pack/fantastic four type superhero team to protect their home city of chicago. right around the time ned was set to marry plucky love interest catelyn tully, brandon and lyanna disappeared under mysterious circumstances. shortly after the birth of their first child, ned and cat adopted newborn jon under equally mysterious circumstances. ned took over the family superhero business and benjen went off in search of answers or whatever. he is not the only superhero in chicago but he has kind of a role like batman in gotham. cat and ned's children grew up with the understanding that they would probably develop powers and the standing rule is that all stark children will have the opportunity to join trailblazers when they are 18, so long as they go to college, but it's p likely younger starklets will find their way around that. combat training is available and encouraged, but not mandatory. they live in the north suburbs of chicago, and not the city proper. ned is obvi the sponsor and go-between for all the legal stuff. he probably has a job in municipal politics but I will leave that to any potential players.

the direwolves are just suspiciously large dogs that ned rescued as puppies in the course of his superhero work. the kids couldn't bear to give any away so they kept them all. idk if warging is allowed as like a secondary mutation in addition to more original primary powers?? it isn't super useful in a traditional superhero fight because the warg's human body must remain unconscious during the possession.

also if anyone is bringing any characters to berkeley (the college or the town), the bay area, or san francisco proper, hit me up!!! not unrelatedly, if anyone is apping any teleporters or pilots with their own aircraft, hit me up as well.

oh and if anyone was wondering about the tullys they are an old tammany hall irish family that for the most part still lives in new york

I mean they don't have to be but wouldn't it be cool if they were

I'm not sure what warging in so I may need some explanation for that before I can comment on that.

But, basically, the idea of some kind of Family History when it comes to superheroes makes total sense in terms of the Starks, but I think you may need to just be a tad less specific in terms of Jon's castmates. Like, defining a bit of a family structure is definitely ok, but try not to name everyone with specific roles, because that could very quite restricting to future players.

And like, in that case, you would definitely want to slow down in regards to the Tully's and stuff, at least from the start.

Sorry if I am misunderstanding anything! I have a bit of canon knowledge of ASOIAF but not much.

    Medabots

    [personal profile] metabee 2014-01-12 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, Lex (talianora) here! Going to be mentioning a lot of this in Metabee's app, however since it could apply to other possible castmates I figure I would post this here.

Currently going with the idea that the Medabot Corporation is actually a major worldwide tech/robots/weapons firm which has recently begun working with various peacekeeping groups to develop a line of fully sentient AI robots which could be used in a variety of uses depending on part and upgrade combinations. Utilizing all their research from past projects, the Medabot Corporation has created a number of prototype robots which they have been testing within their own facilities. As an unexpected flaw in the AI programming, all of the Medabots have begun displaying distinct personalities, which makes controlled testing difficult, but had overall been seen as a positive development since it implies that the AI program is more advanced than originally anticipated.

The various Medabots have all been through thorough testing with the Corporation's facilities and have been approved by various groups such as CONDOR to begin field training. Due to the varying personalities of the robots, where they complete their field training is determined on a case by case basis (for example, a more unpredictable robot like Metabee would have to serve within a supervised group, while more 'mature' bots like Rokusho could be soloists who report themselves). The goal with assigning is to determine the ideal way to train different Medabots should similar personality variances occur in the future. Since the Medabots are likely to be working with humans, a human partner may be assigned to observe how they react to different relationship dynamics (which would align more with the canon where all Medabots have a Medafighter who gives them orders in combat).

This pretty much sums up how I'm planning to angle Metabee's origin story, probably going try to have him join up with either the West Coast Trailblazers or a similar team. If anyone has a suggestions or comments I'd love to hear them.

    Re: Medabots

    [personal profile] nitrodamus 2014-01-12 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
This all sounds legit, except one factor - Harry and I were talking about it, and it seems like in this setting the fact that the robots are developing distinct personalities and apparent sentience would be a bigger deal, because we don't have any background stuff dealing with that.

So what we were thinking is that, along with their training, CONDOR is primarily interested in verifying if they are, in fact, sentient as part of their studies. Because that would be sort of a revolutionary thing in AI technology and robotics. So before the Medabot corporation can go ahead with anything big, CONDOR wants to test this out.

Because if they really are sentient, then all kinds of other social ethics things are going to come into play. But they don't want to get ahead of themselves until they are sure.

(PS. I also basically screamed MEDABOTS when i saw this because i frigging love medabots.)

    MILLY & BAELHEIT | RE: CYBORGS/CYBERNETICS

    [personal profile] bombsheltered 2014-01-12 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
AY SO I'm apping Baelheit & Milly, a father/daughter combo 2-pack from Baten Kaitos, and there is a WHOLE LOT OF cybernetics/cyborging going on with them and I'm still trying to figure out exactly where it fits in setting-wise.

HERE ARE THE BASICS (some of which are detailed in Milly's app; still working on Baelheit's): Baelheit is a scientist specializing in cybernetics who used to work for TRIDENT a long while back (and while rumors abound, nobody can prove it), until a TRAGIC SCIENCE EXPERIMENT killed his wife and severely injured little Milly. He used the power of MACHINA CYBERNETICS to save her life, and now Milly is a TEEN CYBORG, most of her body having been replaced with cybernetic implants after the accident. After this, Baelheit quit TRIDENT and once Milly was of age, she went off solo superheroing. Since he quit TRIDENT, Baelheit started his own private R&D firm and has been working on developing better and more refined cybernetics tech, and he is about to/has just made a move into the political world, running for SOME KIND OF POLITICAL OFFICE with CYBERNETICS FOR EVERYONE (as a way to better humanity and make people Better) as a big part of his political platform. The fact that Milly is a cyborg is a BIG SECRET and something she's ashamed of/uncomfortable with because she has daddy issues out the wazoo and it makes her feel less human.

This is basically identical to canon, except that instead of wanting to make everyone cyborgs, canon Baelheit ran for Emperor, won the office, and then tried to force everyone to live in a giant mechanical island but only if they would undergo a procedure that effectively incapacitated their spirits/hearts. Either way, he was still doing it because he Thought It Was Right (he thought that people needed to be saved from the power of their hearts by introducing machinery and more advanced technology) and because he deeply believes it is his DESTINY, which makes him the worst kind of well-intentioned extremist.

Where I run into fuzzy things is the legality of cybernetics in this setting. Harry mentioned that since it's (in theory) fairly new technology, there wouldn't really be any established laws about it yet, which I can run with. I just want to figure out the extent to which Milly is an ILLEGAL CYBORG so I know how to play it (although even if it weren't illegal, making your seven-year-old daughter a cyborg with technology developed in conjunction with a villainous organization is probably not the paragon of lawful good) and how to play Baelheit's political campaign. He'll have other issues on his platform (and I haven't really decided what kind of office he should be running for yet, honestly, so suggestions are welcome on that front) but he's really going to be pushing making cybernetics more widely available to people, as well as 100% TOTALLY LEGAL, and if there isn't any existing legislation on cybernetics he's going to be very invested in wanting to have a hand in making sure any future legislation is written the way he wants it to be. What he's been doing in the last 12 years since he left TRIDENT also depends on what the legal status of cybernetics is; he's selling technology he developed either way, but what technology he's selling (and to whom) depends on what the deal with cybernetics is.

Any suggestions/infos would be totes welcome as well as suggestions for changes if some of this doesn't jive very well wit the setting; I've tried to adapt their canon relationship and shared backstory into this setting as much as I can while remaining faithful to their intentions/motivations. Either way I'm HELLA PSYCHED to get my Milly & Baelheit on!!!

Yeah, I think it's definitely a very flexible time when it comes to how cybernetics and advanced AI are treated, which actually makes it fairly interesting for a character like this, because he could have a lot of personal sway in how things roll out.

It obviously isn't all around illegal, but I think the most questionable thing in terms of Milly would be that his technology would not have been test approved for medical use on humans. Since, like medication, that thing would probably have to be approved to be allowed in a more general sense. So while nobody would get arrested or whatever happened to Milly, it could see be seen and weird and embarassing that he used EXPERIMENTAL TECHNOLOGY on his own, unconsenting child.

And since there's probably still a great deal of debate (which i'm sure would also be religiously fueled) there are probably people who would react to Milly badly if they knew the extent of her replacements. It'd probably be on par with being a homosexual about a decade back in terms of social unpleasantness.

hi!! my name is Z and some of you know me, but if you don't HI!! I'm apping Rielle "Kit" Peddler from Android: Netrunner which is an ultra-nerdy card game. Kit is a technopath and a hacker/technology activist and is FAMOUS ON THE INTERNET, and also is really generally tapped into things. she runs an ~~anonymous blog~~ called The Uplink where she blogs about FREEDOM OF INFORMATION and such, and she's caused quite a lot of trouble for various corporations and governments over the years. ssso if your character is any kind of hacker or similar, hit me up!! there's a large chance Kit would know of or them personally! OuO

Kit is also absurdly obsessed with robots and cybernetic technology and if your character is well known in the fields of robotics/cyborgs then you should HIT ME UP. especially if they ARE a robot or a cyborg.

I already shared this but I'm sure that Sollux will start prowling around the net as soon as he has the chance to figure out code. And given that it's code, he will probably figure that out before he figures out English.

    GLaDOS - re: AIs

    [personal profile] tetrodotox1n 2014-01-14 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
OK so i noticed that in response to the medabee thing you mentioned that AIs would actually be a pretty big deal in this universe, and uh. given that i plan on playing glados..... i figured i should ask if there's anything i should keep in mind?

like i'm playing her pretty close to canon - but with the exception of the combine invasion, which no longer conveniently coincides with her takeover of aperture, aka there's no global panic to distract everyone from the murderous AI next door. is there anything i should know wrt playing aperture's development of her or how she's pretty much keeping her existence a secret rn, stuff like that?

would there be any problem with space ghost's backstory - basically, the hanna barbera space ghost cartoon is a live action children's tv show that made his career ("career") in the late sixties/early seventies, and when it flopped he was able to do SGC2C on adult swim which recently crumbled spectacularly, causing him to move to LA? I'd like to keep his origins origins as vague as they in the source material (initially, at least) - he's a man, he came from space, and at some point before the 1960s, he died - but I can come up with something more concrete for the app or if it'll be interesting or useful in the game.

also I guess I am currently conceiving him as more a ghost than a space man, so... immateriality flight etc. are part of his power set rather than props he stole from his first tv show. I think I have him at power level C at the moment but if this wouldn't work I'm happy to reconsider!

    [personal profile] mockingjaded 2014-01-14 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, nah, if his backstory is super vague in his canon you can keep it that way here! Being a spaceman ghost is just fine - the only way we would ever need more was if it came up as a point of relevance somehow.

Power level C is absolutely fine, as are general ghost abilities. Do you mean in his original canon he needed devices to do these things? I'm just not sure what you meant, there.

Original character, queries on cryogenic freezing

    [personal profile] will_o_wisp 2014-01-14 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi, I'm new to this, but I wanted to ask if it's okay to play a vintage human popsicle that has been brought back to life from (unanticipated) cryogenic suspension, to be revived in the modern era? I've got the full writeup of her background here (Though one or two parts are still WIP) and have tried to make everything around the circumstances of her freezing open to interpretation. The only dates I've put in are to establish her family life and pre-revival hero career, and no other heroes or groups are named there. If you would rather that I didn't, I'll not be sore about bringing her story forward into the modern era.

On another note, I'm concerned about being OP? I'm not sure if her powers are B or C, and if I should remove the super-strength, leaving her with just flight and the ability to become incorporeal for a specific length of time.

Also I've done mainly IM-based RP before this, but don't know how to organize samples of my ability to rp for inspection. Is there a specific format for these that you're looking for, so that I can look up and provide for that?

it's Phrenotobe from Tumblr, I finally took the plunge and wanted to confirm a few things with the mods on what is and isn't okay.

I have a post here: http://prettiestfroginthispond.dreamwidth.org/398.html with my app.

I'm also confused about writing samples, but hopefully my first one is okay.

I have a comment for folks upthread playing robots/cyborgs/ai/etc. in favor of their liberation and the acknowledgement of their sentience. I am (for once in my rp career) not playing a revolutionary in the marginalized class. Rather, I am playing a member of the oppressor class having conflicted feelings about the ways he has been complicit in injustice. Also, he's brilliant at repairs. I invite you to bother Tarvek.

Proper Nouns/Potential NPC’s summed up from backstory: These can be merged with existing entities or otherwise reorganized. I am not averse to linking the Other to the Condesce, for example, or ret-conning Sturmhalten into a corporation rather than a country. I am listing the ones I most badly want to be warped/tied into other people’s stories first, and I will retcon out the canon entities in favor of the Capital H-verse ones.

Agatha - a superhero who was captured in Sturmhalten while travelling with Zeetha, ideally someone registered / friendly to CONDOR, also someone who saved Tarvek's life when everything went pear-shaped in Sturmhalten, possibly possessed, definitely someone Tarvek has a crush on
Zeetha - a superhero who was travelling with Agatha, someone who helped when everything went badly in Sturmhalten
Gil - a nerdy childhood friend, someone else Tarvek has a crush on
the Other - some sort of horrible otherworldly entity that possesses people

One of the other characters I'm thinking of playing, aside from this dork, is Atomic Robo, from the comic of the same name. One of the important parts of his backstory is that, from a legal standpoint, he's considered to be both human and a natural-born US Citizen.

So, possible shenanigans there if I get around to putting him in.

Jake is your standard Flying Brick superhero (flight/superstrength/superspeed/new powers as the plot demands) who flies around rescuing people from muggers and generally trying to be a really cool hero like the ones in movies and comic books because he's a huge dork with no life. ... except ACTUALLY he's a reality-warper who Believes stuff into being true (or false) and gave himself the powers he now has because he really really wanted them. He doesn't know the true nature of his powers and he can't control them. Which could prove disastrous for someone as gullible as him!

He's unlicensed (because whenever fictional heroes' identities are revealed their families are always in danger!!!) and not part of any group, although he often works with his best bud Dirk Strider, but I am up for any and all CR. Classmates at school, neighbors, other heroes he may have run into in the past, what have you!

I have no idea how much of Ammy's story has actually occurred in Japan, and how much has occurred in some alternate plane on Japan! Orochi is kind of a big deal (she understated), and I don't want to mess around with other peoples' Japan-based histories.

I think a clever plan of having Orochi still be sealed, even though Ammy is looking for Susanoo, should fix a lot of that? Though I think there's still a part of this whole mess where she seals him on Earth that should be a couple hundred years back. Probably kind of messy.

dirk strider | homestuck -- mod questions :O

    [personal profile] sxiz 2014-01-17 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
ok in canon dirk programmed a sentient AI (referred to as AR) whom i would very much like to involve in his story here. so my questions are:

    1. if dirk keeps AR a secret (and AR WOULD want to remain relatively secret) he can avoid being subjected to any governmental regulations, correct?
    2. dirk also has two other sentient robots, though their inclusion in this AU isn't as essential. but unlike AR (who resides in dirk's computerized sunglasses) they have physical robot bodies, and one of them likes to travel, so there's not much chance they'd be kept secret. what exactly would happen to them?
    3. as i said, i really want to do things with AR, and i COULD just app him myself separately, but it'd be way easier and more intuitive for me to play him as an extension of dirk's character (which is pretty much his canon role, both textually and metatextually, as he is presented to us as a person not entirely separate from dirk), if that's allowed. so basically i'm wondering if i could play him the way some other character might play an animal companion or whatever. technically not the character they apped, but still under their control. of course, if anyone did want to app him in the future, i'd let him go. there's not much potential for backstory conflict here, as it would be very very difficult to write AR as separate from dirk and i don't think anyone would try, so they'd have to mold their backstory to mine regardless of what i do - unless dirk only invents AR when someone starts playing him, which i'd like to avoid in case it never happens. but if the answer to all this is "no" then like i said i could app AR separately, although i'd like to keep that as a last resort.
    4. completely non-robot related: can i give dirk a few powers that he won't have at the start of the game, but gains later?

    --

and now that that's over with: i am DETERMINED to play AR one way or another after seeing all the robots/AIs in this setting (GLADOS!!!) so hi everyone i hope we can cause lots of cyber mayhem together :)

on top of that, i want to see if there's anyone planning on apping roxy lalonde? if so i'd like to discuss backstory options with them! i'm also up for planning things with jane or dave, but there's some stuff i want to do with roxy specifically and it would be great if i had someone to work out details with.

    Hi! (PUTS ON MOD HAT)

    1. Yep! in fact –
    2. if they're just hanging around and doing their own thing there probably wouldn't be much to-do about their relative sentience because he isn't, like, a corporation building them for a specific purpose which would probably be ethically dubious, and also because he's from the future
    3. That is also totally OK. We'd want to list AR as a character separate from Dirk on the wiki and stuff, but there's no reason to submit separate apps since, obviously, their backstories are heavily intertwined and they are in many ways the same person. Just make sure to cover AR in your personality and powers sections.
    4. As long as they are related to his existing powerset and/or there's an in game reason for him acquiring them – you'd also have to tell us about it when you wanted to do that, to make sure! This is one we probably ought to have put on the FAQ actually, whoops, I will amend that!

lookin forward to all these robot shenanigans!

I don't imagine anything with Flora's canon/backstory is going to be an issue. Nobody is going to app any of the other Starkadders. Probably.

So, Danny Phantom here is from the series of the same name. There's not much I actually need to change, aside from definitely removing both Reality Trip and Phantom Planet as things that happened, as the series is mostly isolated to Amity Park.

That said, I might need to have regular villains replace some of the ghost ones.

Also, Danny's going to be bringing an otherworldly realm in with him as the original source of his powers. Called the Ghost Zone, it's a dimension existing alongside Earth that's filled with ghosts, some of them the spirits of the formerly living, and some of them that actually came into existence there. Anyone who is a ghost or deals with them might want to keep it in mind.

Also? While I can muck around with some of the people in his life, there are some who are too tied into who he is to really write them out of his backstory. His parents and sister are easy to push into the background, but it'd make things easier on me if someone was willing to play his best friends Sam Manson and Tucker Foley, and also his archnemesis, Vlad Masters.
