PRE-APPLICATION DISCUSSION POST!

Hey guys! I had some requests for a discussion post where people can shoot the shit about potential backstory and power ideas, so here it is!

For best results, make sure to check out the FAQ and other setting information for inspiration, such as superhero registration and power levels, as well as taking at peek at the game wiki to see what's already been started!

POST RULES:
  • Feel free to discuss any facet of the setting you like, and how they relate to your character ideas!
  • Please keep in mind though, that nothing can be set in stone until the related apps are accepted. Try to not rely completely on everything on this board being apped successfully.
  • If you would like to know whether something sounds good to the mods, just flag us down by giving a shout in the subject line or by pinging us on plurk! We'll hit you up as soon as we can.
  • Have fun!

Ah yeah that could work. Maybe some kind of amber encased fossil for them. It would definitely keep them out of sight and make the whole Bravery battle more of a spiritual mental duel.
    Works for me.

I kinda want to get imput from the other Kyoryuger player too if they're gonna be in this.

Alright. Slept on it, and I'm going to throw a few things at the wall regarding the bad guys mentioned in the blurb so far, plus some of the other and seeing if there's anything good here that could be of use setting-wise.

Canonically, Strega (the group's name) were the victims of some extremely messed up experiments as children, thanks to a huge and morally dubious company named the Kirijo Group. While they were granted powers, there were only three survivors, and they're dying due to the drugs they take to control the experiments' side effects.
When Chidori's gone, the leftover members go off the deep end. They start a cult worshipping the game's main villain, Nyx, a being who (short version) exists to bring about the death of humanity.

In this setting, I'm throwing Strega out as the name of their species. Living energy aliens is basically the order of the day. The trio here are again going to be the survivors of Kirijo Group experiments - here, Kirijo is performing experiments that have to do with superpower induction, and the powers and potential of this particular species have made them very interesting to their scientists. On escaping, they are obviously very unhappy with humanity. Earth's conditions (yellow sun? oxygen atmosphere?) are slowly killing them, too. They're stranded, they're lost, they're not afraid of death. The remaining two members of the group could still be doing villain type things out there.

Been discussing things with the player who reserved Mitsuru, and there's talk of the possibility of the Kirijo Group being up to a lot of interesting shenanigans apart from this stuff.

As for Nyx? Well, there's always room for a good planet-destroyer in superhero lore, isn't there?

    Medabots

    [personal profile] metabee 2014-01-12 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, Lex (talianora) here! Going to be mentioning a lot of this in Metabee's app, however since it could apply to other possible castmates I figure I would post this here.

Currently going with the idea that the Medabot Corporation is actually a major worldwide tech/robots/weapons firm which has recently begun working with various peacekeeping groups to develop a line of fully sentient AI robots which could be used in a variety of uses depending on part and upgrade combinations. Utilizing all their research from past projects, the Medabot Corporation has created a number of prototype robots which they have been testing within their own facilities. As an unexpected flaw in the AI programming, all of the Medabots have begun displaying distinct personalities, which makes controlled testing difficult, but had overall been seen as a positive development since it implies that the AI program is more advanced than originally anticipated.

The various Medabots have all been through thorough testing with the Corporation's facilities and have been approved by various groups such as CONDOR to begin field training. Due to the varying personalities of the robots, where they complete their field training is determined on a case by case basis (for example, a more unpredictable robot like Metabee would have to serve within a supervised group, while more 'mature' bots like Rokusho could be soloists who report themselves). The goal with assigning is to determine the ideal way to train different Medabots should similar personality variances occur in the future. Since the Medabots are likely to be working with humans, a human partner may be assigned to observe how they react to different relationship dynamics (which would align more with the canon where all Medabots have a Medafighter who gives them orders in combat).

This pretty much sums up how I'm planning to angle Metabee's origin story, probably going try to have him join up with either the West Coast Trailblazers or a similar team. If anyone has a suggestions or comments I'd love to hear them.

Re: STARKS STARKS STARKS STARKS (a song of ice and fire)

I'm not sure what warging in so I may need some explanation for that before I can comment on that.

But, basically, the idea of some kind of Family History when it comes to superheroes makes total sense in terms of the Starks, but I think you may need to just be a tad less specific in terms of Jon's castmates. Like, defining a bit of a family structure is definitely ok, but try not to name everyone with specific roles, because that could very quite restricting to future players.

And like, in that case, you would definitely want to slow down in regards to the Tully's and stuff, at least from the start.

Sorry if I am misunderstanding anything! I have a bit of canon knowledge of ASOIAF but not much.

This all sounds legit, except one factor - Harry and I were talking about it, and it seems like in this setting the fact that the robots are developing distinct personalities and apparent sentience would be a bigger deal, because we don't have any background stuff dealing with that.

So what we were thinking is that, along with their training, CONDOR is primarily interested in verifying if they are, in fact, sentient as part of their studies. Because that would be sort of a revolutionary thing in AI technology and robotics. So before the Medabot corporation can go ahead with anything big, CONDOR wants to test this out.

Because if they really are sentient, then all kinds of other social ethics things are going to come into play. But they don't want to get ahead of themselves until they are sure.

(PS. I also basically screamed MEDABOTS when i saw this because i frigging love medabots.)

Ok, that works for me, since I guess that could be another motivator to seeing how they function in normal interactions with humans. I'll be sure to highlight that in my app and Metabee's origin story.

This will be my first time playing Metabee at all but I love Medabots a lot (my roommate and I watched the entire show last year since she had never seen it, and I have basically been rewatching it all this week for Research). Hopefully I do an ok job, I am pretty excited about the possibilities here!

yeah I was pretty nervous bringing jon in as a lcw because his characterization presupposes a lot of things about his family structure?? a big part of his character is his position as ned stark's bastard/the bastard of winterfell and a desire to live up to his house's/father's example. most of his childhood was spent in friendly competition with robb. it's very difficult to fully understand him outside of the context of these relationships. some biographical details are necessary in order to articulate what they mean and how they affect jon. in order for him to be the person he is at this point relative to his canon, he needs to have grown up in a certain environment, and I tried to translate that environment to this au as accurately as possible. I would be super okay with changing anything in his background to match up with potential castmates. I tried to explain each of these changes in the 'differences from canon' section of his app. one of the distinctive/annoying things about asoiaf is that every character's actions are the result of years and years of history and it's very difficult to separate a character from their upbringing and the choices made by their parents and family members before they were even able to have a say in it. this is especially evident with jon as opposed to his siblings, as he might possibly be connected to to some kind of ancient conspiracy involving lyanna stark and the targaryen dynasty that drives the main plot of the series. I tried to gloss over that as best as I could, but a major theme of the series is that the current plot was set in motion years ago during robert's rebellion, and that the choices made then shaped the current characters into what they are now.

tl;dr, it's very difficult to talk about jon without talking about what it means to be ned stark's bastard (or the superhero equivalent), and it's very difficult to explain what that means without outlining the basic role and character of ned stark. I am open to suggestions tho!

    [personal profile] nitrodamus 2014-01-12 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I totally get that! And I do think it is fine describing those relationships, since yeah, ASOIAF characters are very much tied up in other people. I think the best way to go about this would be to just focus on the relationships and not so much what the other character is DOING. Like I think it being a family trend thing is alright to say too.

If you are flexible about changing things that helps a lot too. Another tactic is you can just refer to people without actually specifying names, unless it's really necessary. I find that helps sometimes.

But yeah some of this will be inevitable, I just thought I'd mention it as something to be on the cautious side with.

For rankings, it doesn't really matter how unreliable her powers are, just ultimately how effective she is capable of being. Like IF the COMP was destroyed she would be neutralized, but how often would that happen? It's sort of a question of how good she is on average.

    MILLY & BAELHEIT | RE: CYBORGS/CYBERNETICS

    [personal profile] bombsheltered 2014-01-12 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
AY SO I'm apping Baelheit & Milly, a father/daughter combo 2-pack from Baten Kaitos, and there is a WHOLE LOT OF cybernetics/cyborging going on with them and I'm still trying to figure out exactly where it fits in setting-wise.

HERE ARE THE BASICS (some of which are detailed in Milly's app; still working on Baelheit's): Baelheit is a scientist specializing in cybernetics who used to work for TRIDENT a long while back (and while rumors abound, nobody can prove it), until a TRAGIC SCIENCE EXPERIMENT killed his wife and severely injured little Milly. He used the power of MACHINA CYBERNETICS to save her life, and now Milly is a TEEN CYBORG, most of her body having been replaced with cybernetic implants after the accident. After this, Baelheit quit TRIDENT and once Milly was of age, she went off solo superheroing. Since he quit TRIDENT, Baelheit started his own private R&D firm and has been working on developing better and more refined cybernetics tech, and he is about to/has just made a move into the political world, running for SOME KIND OF POLITICAL OFFICE with CYBERNETICS FOR EVERYONE (as a way to better humanity and make people Better) as a big part of his political platform. The fact that Milly is a cyborg is a BIG SECRET and something she's ashamed of/uncomfortable with because she has daddy issues out the wazoo and it makes her feel less human.

This is basically identical to canon, except that instead of wanting to make everyone cyborgs, canon Baelheit ran for Emperor, won the office, and then tried to force everyone to live in a giant mechanical island but only if they would undergo a procedure that effectively incapacitated their spirits/hearts. Either way, he was still doing it because he Thought It Was Right (he thought that people needed to be saved from the power of their hearts by introducing machinery and more advanced technology) and because he deeply believes it is his DESTINY, which makes him the worst kind of well-intentioned extremist.

Where I run into fuzzy things is the legality of cybernetics in this setting. Harry mentioned that since it's (in theory) fairly new technology, there wouldn't really be any established laws about it yet, which I can run with. I just want to figure out the extent to which Milly is an ILLEGAL CYBORG so I know how to play it (although even if it weren't illegal, making your seven-year-old daughter a cyborg with technology developed in conjunction with a villainous organization is probably not the paragon of lawful good) and how to play Baelheit's political campaign. He'll have other issues on his platform (and I haven't really decided what kind of office he should be running for yet, honestly, so suggestions are welcome on that front) but he's really going to be pushing making cybernetics more widely available to people, as well as 100% TOTALLY LEGAL, and if there isn't any existing legislation on cybernetics he's going to be very invested in wanting to have a hand in making sure any future legislation is written the way he wants it to be. What he's been doing in the last 12 years since he left TRIDENT also depends on what the legal status of cybernetics is; he's selling technology he developed either way, but what technology he's selling (and to whom) depends on what the deal with cybernetics is.

Any suggestions/infos would be totes welcome as well as suggestions for changes if some of this doesn't jive very well wit the setting; I've tried to adapt their canon relationship and shared backstory into this setting as much as I can while remaining faithful to their intentions/motivations. Either way I'm HELLA PSYCHED to get my Milly & Baelheit on!!!

hi!! my name is Z and some of you know me, but if you don't HI!! I'm apping Rielle "Kit" Peddler from Android: Netrunner which is an ultra-nerdy card game. Kit is a technopath and a hacker/technology activist and is FAMOUS ON THE INTERNET, and also is really generally tapped into things. she runs an ~~anonymous blog~~ called The Uplink where she blogs about FREEDOM OF INFORMATION and such, and she's caused quite a lot of trouble for various corporations and governments over the years. ssso if your character is any kind of hacker or similar, hit me up!! there's a large chance Kit would know of or them personally! OuO

Kit is also absurdly obsessed with robots and cybernetic technology and if your character is well known in the fields of robotics/cyborgs then you should HIT ME UP. especially if they ARE a robot or a cyborg.

I already shared this but I'm sure that Sollux will start prowling around the net as soon as he has the chance to figure out code. And given that it's code, he will probably figure that out before he figures out English.

yesss. I'm hecka excited for Kit and Sollux CR, positive or negative I don't even care.

I don't know if Sollux would be able to... discern this bc it's Technopath Stuff, but Kit has her braintendrils curled around various corners of the internet, there are definitely traces of her ~~cyber-essence~ or whatever to be found. I guess this is mostly only relevant to technopaths, but maybe telepaths/empaths/whatever would pick it up too? WHO KNOWS.

    [personal profile] nitrodamus 2014-01-12 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think it's definitely a very flexible time when it comes to how cybernetics and advanced AI are treated, which actually makes it fairly interesting for a character like this, because he could have a lot of personal sway in how things roll out.

It obviously isn't all around illegal, but I think the most questionable thing in terms of Milly would be that his technology would not have been test approved for medical use on humans. Since, like medication, that thing would probably have to be approved to be allowed in a more general sense. So while nobody would get arrested or whatever happened to Milly, it could see be seen and weird and embarassing that he used EXPERIMENTAL TECHNOLOGY on his own, unconsenting child.

And since there's probably still a great deal of debate (which i'm sure would also be religiously fueled) there are probably people who would react to Milly badly if they knew the extent of her replacements. It'd probably be on par with being a homosexual about a decade back in terms of social unpleasantness.

    [personal profile] nitrodamus 2014-01-12 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
He'd probably be able to sense it if he hooked his brain into the internet, which he technically could do now because of the implants, but he's never really done that before.

    [personal profile] bombsheltered 2014-01-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
YEAH that's what I had thought, more or less -- that while cybernetics themselves might not be seen as BAD AND EVIL, the circumstances of Milly's becoming a cyborg (and where the technology originated) are questionable at best. And Baelheit certainly wouldn't be the only one out there developing cybernetics, but he's made a career out of it and is probably decently well-known, at least by folks in the R&D/science community. Milly has her own very strong reasons for wanting to keep it a secret, and Baelheit has impressed the need for secrecy on her basically her whole life, but I imagine that if and when he gets closer to his goals (DESTINY) he might feel the need for her to be public about it in order to further his cause. I'm still working out what office he would even run for, because I'm not sure what would be the most useful for him. But I think it's safe to say that cybernetic implants for humans are at least somewhat controversial at this point?

ha ha "test approved". Milly was the test. The test of destiny.
liberaition: (perhaps you are less human)

    [personal profile] liberaition 2014-01-12 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
okay, cool. but yeah Kit keeps PRETTY CLOSE TABS on her TURF, so she would for sure notice Sollux skulking around in there, and probably contact him. maybe even seek him out in person if he doesn't respond, although that... would probably not go beyond stalking

One other thing I have been thinking about, as far as Metabots are concerned. In canon, Medabots can swap out different parts to have different weapons or be able to battle in different environments (air, water, etc). Would that be an acceptable thing in Capital H, for say special occasions, but the Medabot would have to get approval from CONDOR and have the parts shipped from the Medabot Corporation?
